Elvis Sings "The Wonderful World of Christmas"

Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas is the King of Rock & Roll giving it the old ho-ho-ho for his fans, circa 1971. As can be expected of later Elvis, he's at his best when he slows down and lets the profound nuance of his voice wrap itself around the material. "The First Noel," "Silver Bells," "Blue Christmas," and "It Won't Seem Like Christmas (Without You)" are among the highlights. At 12 tracks, it's also more generous than many of the repackages where albums were trimmed to eight or nine songs. --Rob O'Connor

Elvis TV Special [LIVE]

As pivotal a moment in his career as "That's Alright, Mama" and "Heartbreak Hotel," this was the show that put Elvis Presley back on his throne. It came at a time when the Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, and acid rock ruled the genre and followed a decade of nothing but mostly lousy Elvis movies. On December 3, 1968, the camera panned in on the King's incredibly handsome face: "If you're lookin' for trouble, you came to the right place," he snarled before bursting into a terrific "Guitar Man." From that moment through the special's goose-bump-inducing finale, "If I Can Dream" (after which, legend has it, Presley collapsed from exhaustion backstage), this stands as one of rock music's great moments. Alas, it was recorded for television, so the audio quality on both vinyl and CD has never been of the highest quality. Memories, a two-disc compilation with cleaned-up sound, includes all the outtakes from the "unplugged" segment, but the stuff remains best viewed on video via either the special itself or the One Night with You outtakes video. --Bill Holdship

Elvis' Golden Records

There are several books that supposedly introduce the uninitiated to the King--including Elvis for Beginners and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Elvis--and this 1958 compilation (his first) is an aural equivalent, spotlighting the initial post-Sun '56 and '57 hit singles that originally transformed the King into...well, the King! If you're not yet ready to invest in the King of Rock 'n' Roll box set, this makes for an excellent alternative. After all, it's awfully hard to go wrong with tracks like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," and "Jailhouse Rock"--although they're now so overly familiar to most of us that they might as well be the national anthem. Nevertheless, rock & roll as we know it--and the very concept of "rock star"--essentially began here. --Bill Holdship

Everthing About Elvis W/Book

The actual title of this CD is: ELVIS PRESLEY: Maybellene. and contains 13 tracks. It was put out in the UK by Time Music International. In my opinion, it is of very poor quality and appears to be recordings from some of his earliest performances in the 50s.

From Elvis in Memphis

In January 1969, Elvis Presley was still mighty fired up from the success of his legendary NBC-TV "comeback" special, which had aired only a little over a month before. Eager to record some relevant music after a decade of, for the most part, horrible movie soundtracks, Presley entered Chip Loman's famous (122 chart hits in three years at the time) American Studio in Memphis to jam with the also famous house band.

From the Heart [IMPORT]

In the late 1960s, Elvis Presley revitalized his career both by looking backward, notably during the off-the-cuff performances of his old songs on his 1968 television special, and by looking forward and beginning to perform new songs growing out of the trend toward maturity and social consciousness in writing that the '60s engendered.
